Second Thoughts: FTM-350R Crashes!

About six hours into the drive to Los Angeles today, the new radio hung while displaying a received packet.

The FTM-350R became totally unresponsive and only removing power from the radio brought it back to life. A quick disconnect did the trick.

Not a great beginning for the second day of use, huh?

My FTM-350R crashes about every two weeks. After it "locks up" the only way to bring it back is to disconnect the power and wait. The last time it was 45 minutes before I could get the radio to power back on. Really not a good way to start off.

Are there any recent reviews of the 350R. I have read a couple of threads stating that Yaesu may have applied som "patches" to fix issues.

Looking seriously at it for the APRS functionality.

After owning the FTM-350 for a couple of month it kept locking up. I finally had to send it in for repairs. AES told me to send it to them and they told me nothing was wrong with it. When I got it back it kept locking up again, the lesson I learned don't send it back to AES or else you'll be out $20.00 shipping. I finally sent it to Yaesu, another $20.00, and got it back working. It has been working great but my APRS no longer shows up on the maps. I guess I'll have to send it back before the warranty runs out. I love the radio and the ease of operating but not the down time.

Make Yaesu pay for the shipping both ways. It isn't YOUR FAULT their engineers screwed up. They are probably getting a big laugh over the number of radios that must be messed you that haven't been in for repair.
