Hams Help During Phone Outage

From Jim Oberhofer, KN6PE, author of OutpostPM:

As you may have heard, San Jose police determined sabotage caused phone outage in Santa Clara, Santa Cruz counties today. Apparently, somebody opened a manhole in South San Jose, climbed down 8 to 10 feet and cut four or five fiber-optic cables. Phone, Internet, and email service has been out all day Thursday, with no ETR. See the details here, or Google “att outage California”.

Santa Clara County RACES was activated and provided Mutual Aid Communicators to south county cities, one request coming in from Morgan Hill EOC.

Also, the message below sites message traffic by packet via several BBS stations.

In short, while we all prepared for “the big one” in the bay area, it doesn’t take much to thrust amateur radio into the limelight and put our resources and skills to use. Packet is alive and well.

Regards,
Jim O KN6PE
